Chapter 3 of 8

Where to monitor

The architecture of a fibre or DSL triple-play network can be partitioned into 4 distinct parts; head-end, core network, access network and customer premises. Each part offers suitable points for verifying the quality of the TV multicasts as shown in the figure below.

Figure 2 - Relevant points at which to perform monitoring in a triple-play network.

An IP TV head-end typically generates between 20 and 300 IP multicasts. Each multicast carries an MPEG-2, h.264/AVC or WM9/VC-1 TV or radio channel.

Performing continuous monitoring of basic parameters such as IP packet jitter and TS (Transport Stream) packet loss at the output of the IPTV head-end is useful in determining where potential problems reside.

Having established that the source signal is correct, a second point suitable for performing continuous monitoring of the TV multicasts is at the border between core and access network. This is of particular interest if the access network is the property of a different operator. Verifying the signal integrity at the demarcation point helps in clearly identifying responsibility.

A third measurement point of interest is at the customer premises. The portable VB10 IP-Probe provides easy testing beneath the residential gateway.
