Cases/Workzone: IP based patient terminal services delivery

Workzone operates a national IP network service for distribution of data, voice and video for the patient terminal manufacturer; Hospitality. The network connects 6 hospitals to the service with many more planned by the end of 2006.

The patient terminal gives patients access to internet browsing, IP telephony and video services such as tv, VoD and radio. The terminal also accesses the patient journals and X-rays, giving doctors and nurses easy access to data at the patient´s bedside.

All the video services to the Hospitality terminals are MPEG-4 h.264 and are generated at the Workzone head-end in Oslo. The network also distributes MPEG-2 services for large condominiums. The real time signals are downlinked from satellite, descrambled and transcoded from MPEG-2 to h.264 for the patient terminals. The services are then transported to the various locations via a fiber-optic network. At all the major sites in the network BRIDGETECH© IP-PROBES are used to monitor network performance continuously and enable fast response in case of service loss or small disruptions.

"Our goal from the start has been zero packet loss and with the
BRIDGETECH© IP-PROBES we are able to achieve this."

"Service disruption due to network congestion or other faults is not tolerated and fast
fault-finding is a key component in proactive managment."

Helge Gallefoss, CEO, Workzone states

With the unique Haspitality patient terminal and the Workzone network, hospitals all over Norway can now benefit from an integrated service to their patients that helps cut cost and increase patient activation. Running advanced services on leased lines is managble with proactive monitoring and easy access to service history and status.
